mail.com IMAP settings
mail.com belongs to the same operator as GMX and WEB.DE and inherits the family habit: access for external programs is something you switch on in the mailbox, not something that is already there. The hosts are its own, and the alias domains — email.com, usa.com and the rest — all connect to the same server.

What breaks here.
- Access for external programs is a mailbox setting. Until it is on, a client gets an authentication failure with a perfectly good password.
- All the alias domains use imap.mail.com. The address can end in email.com or usa.com; the host does not change.
- The username is the full address, alias domain included.
- Free mailboxes are dormancy-checked: an account left unused long enough can stop answering at all, which is worth knowing before you plan a migration out of one.

Where is IMAP switched on?
In the mail.com web interface, in the settings section for POP3/IMAP access. The change applies immediately.
Is an app password needed?
No, the mailbox password is accepted once external access is enabled.
Does an email.com address use a different server?
No. Every mail.com alias domain connects to imap.mail.com on port 993 with SSL/TLS.
Can I keep the mail.com address after migrating?
Yes — a migration copies the mail to another mailbox and changes nothing about the old address, which keeps working until you close it.
